Donaldsonville’s Historic Portal to the Past
Ascension Parish Tourism Commission Unveils — Donaldsonville’s Historic Portal to the Past
On November 19, 2019 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana the team at Ascension Parish Tourism Commission “Tour Ascension” unveiled a project that has been in the making since 2017, Donaldsonville’s Historic Portal to the Past. These “portals” are seven 2’x5′ panels that have been installed throughout the Historic Downtown area of Donaldsonville to provide visitors with a way to learn about the City of Donaldsonville’s rich history at their own pace. The route is approximately 2.5 miles and is perfect for walking, biking or by car.
Donaldsonville, once the state capital of Louisiana houses more that 200 years of significant Louisiana history, yet before these portals, visitors had no way of learning about this history while exploring the city. Tracy Browning, Executive Director of Ascension Parish Tourism said in her speech at the unveiling of the portals “Often when describing Donaldsonville, whether on sales missions with tour operators or at a trade show, while sharing pictures and telling them about the rich history of our historic town, I began to wonder— how will they learn about the history? How will they find the most significant features? In 2017, we began having discussions about how we could educate visitors about the history of Donaldsonville in a way that enabled visitors to discover it on their own. In consulting with other tourism bureaus, an idea evolved to create a series of wayside exhibits, which we are referring to as “portal panels.”
Accompanying the portals is a brochure with a map that shows the location of each panel along with a few other historic structures and museums like the River Road African American Museum you can explore on your route as you find your way through the charming city. The brochures can be found on the “Historic Donaldsonville” portal located on the levee top at 305 Mississippi Street, at the Ascension Parish Tourism visitor center, on TourAscension.com, and will be available at various locations throughout Donaldsonville in the coming weeks. You can download it here.
We invite you to create your own experience in one of Louisiana’s oldest cities. Journey through time in a place that was once a magnet for Indians, explorers, planters, merchants and pirates. Fascinating remnants of a storied past await you!
